Be Not Afraid of Greatness, Celebrating the History of Villanova Theatre

Belle Masque Society, 1956 GIF with Posters appearing

Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them. Your fate awaits you.

Twelfth Night, Act 2 Scene 5

The stage acts as a mirror of our community and is the arena for the cyclical relationship of the arts and audience. By sharing common cultural threads of the storytelling, exposing complex issues on stage, providing catharsis and promoting imagination, theatre’s role in society is a subtle power. This subtly is reflective in how longstanding theatre has been on the Villanova campus and deeply interwoven into the campus community.

The physical exhibit, installed March 2020, was meant to be a celebration of that relationship and highlight many eras of theatre on campus and moments that have helped shape what the program is today. The exhibit also ushers in the new John and Joan Mullen Center for the Performing Arts. This digital exhibit is a small portion of the physical exhibit.

The material in the exhibit are from the University Archives or on loan from the Villanova Theatre Department. Many more items from Villanova Theatre can be found in the Villanova University Digital Library: https://digital.library.villanova.edu/
