The confessions of S. Augustine: in ten books.
London: Kegan Paul, Trench Trübner & Co., 1900.

Limited edition of 400 copies, of which this is number 227. A notice in the book indicates that this volume was part of the 1900 World's Fair display of book arts.

The binding by Cedric Chivers is in thin translucent vellum with gold applications and mother-of-pearl inlays. The publisher's note adds, "The two human figures, lettering, and the areas with the purple background were painted on paper, then covered with transparent vellum. Other elements were then added on top of the vellum--such as the round, pink mother-of-pearl shell in the "C," the gold lines, and gold squares around the two figures."

Regarding the interior of the book, the publisher's note indicates that the pages were "printed on Arnold and Foster's unbleached handmade paper. The illustrations have been designed by Mr. Paul Woodroffe and engraved upon wood by Miss Clemence Housman, by whom the title-page has also been engraved from the design of Mr. Lawrence Housman."

Full-text scans are available in the Digital Library.
