 Discussion Questions

  • Consider your own pets, or those of friends. What makes that animal a pet? How was it chosen? How is it similar to other pets or different from non-pets?
  • What examples of conspicuous consumption pets can you think of in today's world? Would that animal be very exotic - and thus conspicuous - in another country?
  • How many cultures, past or present, do you know that used or use horses? For what purposes? Why might some civilizations not use horses?
  • Are rogue and hunted animals the same in the eyes of mankind? If not, how might they differ?
  • Dragons and unicorns appear alongside tigers and elephants in natural history books. Why do you think a professional text within the scientific field of zoology included these mythical animals?
  • While browsing ‘scientific’ zoological illustrations, consider this: is the animal depicted in its natural environs, with no backdrop, or within human space?
  • How do you, influenced by popular culture today, interpret postmodern animals? Do they have a positive or a negative connotation? Are they more human or more animal?
  • How have modern zoos changed or remained the same from those of decades past?
  • After looking through this exhibit, what human-animal themes do you see in these millennia-old bas-reliefs from the Assyrian city of Nineveh, depicted at left?
